Aminotomy
A procedure that ruptures the amniotic membrane, most often performed to help induce or progress labour.
What is Aminotomy?
An amniotomy, sometimes referred to as breaking the water, is a procedure performed during labour where your obstetric care provider ruptures the amniotic sac using a small, specialized instrument, releasing the amniotic fluid surrounding your baby. This is often done to help induce labour or to help labour progress more efficiently when it has slowed. The procedure itself is generally quick and, because the amniotic sac has no nerve endings, is not typically painful, though you may feel a warm gush of fluid.
Why is this procedure performed?
- Inducing labour when medically indicated
- Helping labour progress more efficiently when it has slowed
- Allowing closer monitoring of your baby during labour
- As part of a broader labour management plan discussed with your care team
- A recommendation from your obstetric provider based on your labour's progress
How does this procedure help?
An amniotomy can help move labour along more efficiently when needed, and, once performed, allows your care team more direct monitoring of your baby during the remainder of labour. Your obstetric team will discuss with you when and why this may be recommended as part of your specific labour plan. This is a routine, well-established part of labour management used judiciously based on your individual circumstances.
