Corneal Transplant
A procedure that replaces a damaged or diseased cornea with healthy donor tissue to restore clear vision.
What is Corneal Transplant?
A corneal transplant replaces all or part of a damaged, scarred, or diseased cornea, the clear front surface of the eye, with healthy donor corneal tissue. Depending on which layers of your cornea are affected, your surgeon may perform a full-thickness transplant or a more targeted partial-thickness transplant that replaces only the affected layers, preserving more of your own healthy corneal tissue where possible. The donor tissue is carefully matched and prepared by an eye bank before your procedure. The surgery is performed under local or general anaesthesia, with the transplanted tissue secured in place using very fine sutures.
Why is this procedure performed?
- Corneal scarring from injury or infection affecting vision
- Keratoconus, a progressive thinning and bulging of the cornea
- Corneal clouding from disease affecting vision clarity
- Corneal swelling that has not responded to other treatments
- Vision loss caused by corneal damage not correctable with glasses or contact lenses
How does this procedure help?
A corneal transplant can restore clear vision that has been significantly compromised by corneal damage or disease, often making a substantial difference in daily life and independence. Recovery is a gradual process, with vision continuing to improve over several months to a year as the eye heals and adjusts to the new corneal tissue. Corneal transplants have a strong long-term success rate, offering lasting visual improvement for the majority of patients.
