What is Fistulotomy?
A fistulotomy treats an anal fistula, an abnormal tunnel that develops between the inside of the anus and the skin nearby, usually following a previous infection or abscess. Your surgeon opens the fistula tract along its entire length, converting it into an open groove that then heals naturally from the inside out over the following weeks, rather than remaining as a closed, infection-prone tunnel. For fistulas involving a significant portion of the surrounding muscle, alternative techniques may be used instead to protect continence, which your surgeon will discuss with you. The procedure is performed under general or spinal anaesthesia.
