Synovectomy
A procedure that removes inflamed joint lining to relieve pain and slow joint damage from chronic inflammation.
What is Synovectomy?
A synovectomy removes the synovium, the lining tissue of a joint, when it has become chronically inflamed, most often due to rheumatoid arthritis or another inflammatory joint condition, and is causing pain, swelling, and progressive joint damage. Removing the inflamed tissue can slow the joint destruction that persistent inflammation causes and relieve associated symptoms. This is often performed arthroscopically, using small incisions and a camera, which generally allows for less pain and a faster recovery than open surgery. The procedure is performed under general or regional anaesthesia.
Why is this procedure performed?
- Chronic joint inflammation not adequately controlled by medication
- Persistent joint swelling and pain from inflamed synovial tissue
- Progressive joint damage linked to ongoing synovial inflammation
- Rheumatoid arthritis affecting a specific, persistently symptomatic joint
- A desire to preserve joint function by addressing inflammation directly
How does this procedure help?
Removing chronically inflamed joint lining can significantly reduce pain and swelling while helping to slow further joint damage, complementing any medical management of the underlying inflammatory condition. Many patients notice a meaningful reduction in symptoms in the affected joint following surgery. Recovery from an arthroscopic synovectomy is generally quicker than open surgery, with physiotherapy supporting your return to normal joint function.
