Vasoepididymostomy
A more complex microsurgical procedure that reconnects the sperm pathway when a standard reversal is not possible.
What is Vasoepididymostomy?
Vasoepididymostomy is a more complex microsurgical procedure used when a standard vasectomy reversal (vasovasostomy) is not possible or successful, typically because there is a blockage in the epididymis, the coiled tube where sperm mature before reaching the vas deferens. Your surgeon connects the vas deferens directly to the epididymis at a point beyond the blockage, using extremely precise microsurgical techniques under high magnification. This is one of the most technically demanding procedures in male fertility surgery, requiring highly specialized surgical expertise. It is performed under general or regional anaesthesia.
Why is this procedure performed?
- A blockage found in the epididymis during vasectomy reversal surgery
- A vasectomy performed many years earlier, increasing the likelihood of epididymal blockage
- Previous unsuccessful vasectomy reversal attempts
- Confirmed epididymal obstruction as the cause of infertility
- As determined necessary during surgical exploration by your fertility surgeon
How does this procedure help?
When a standard vasectomy reversal is not sufficient, vasoepididymostomy offers a specialized alternative that can still restore the pathway for sperm to reach the ejaculate, offering hope for natural conception even in more complex cases. Because of the technical demands of this procedure, success depends significantly on the expertise of your surgical team. Your surgeon provides a realistic, individualized assessment of your prognosis based on the specific findings during your procedure.
