Cystectomy (Bladder Removal)

The surgical removal of all or part of the bladder, most often performed to treat bladder cancer.

What is Cystectomy (Bladder Removal)?

A cystectomy is the surgical removal of the bladder, either entirely (radical cystectomy) or partially, most commonly performed to treat bladder cancer that has invaded the bladder wall or is at high risk of doing so. When the entire bladder is removed, your surgeon also creates a new way for urine to leave your body, either through a reconstructed internal pouch, an external collection system, or a redirected pathway using a section of your own intestine, discussed and planned with you in advance. The procedure is performed under general anaesthesia and, where suitable, may be done using minimally invasive or robotic-assisted techniques to support a smoother recovery.

Why is this procedure performed?

  • Bladder cancer that has invaded the bladder muscle wall
  • Recurrent, high-risk bladder cancer not adequately controlled by other treatments
  • Certain non-cancerous conditions causing severe, irreversible bladder dysfunction
  • Cancer that has spread within the bladder despite earlier treatment
  • As determined necessary by your urologic oncology team

How does this procedure help?

Removing a cancerous bladder can be a critical, often curative step in treating bladder cancer, particularly when caught before it spreads beyond the bladder. Your surgical team works closely with you beforehand to plan the urinary diversion method best suited to your lifestyle and health. While recovery and adjustment take time, most patients adapt well to their new urinary system with the support and guidance of their care team, going on to resume active, fulfilling lives.
