SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)

A minimally invasive laser vision correction procedure performed through a single tiny incision.

What is SMILE (Small Incision Lenticule Extraction)?

SMILE is a newer form of laser vision correction that treats short-sightedness and astigmatism through a single small incision, without creating the larger corneal flap used in LASIK. A laser creates a thin, precisely shaped piece of tissue (lenticule) within the cornea, which your surgeon then removes through the small incision, reshaping the cornea to correct your vision. Because the incision is smaller than a LASIK flap, some patients experience a somewhat gentler recovery. The procedure is performed using numbing eye drops, so you remain awake and comfortable throughout, and takes about ten minutes for both eyes.

Why is this procedure performed?

  • Short-sightedness with or without astigmatism
  • A desire for a minimally invasive laser vision correction option
  • Certain corneal characteristics well suited to the SMILE technique
  • A desire to reduce or eliminate dependence on glasses or contact lenses
  • A stable eyeglass prescription for at least the past year

How does this procedure help?

SMILE offers excellent visual outcomes with a smaller incision than traditional LASIK, which some patients find results in less dry eye and a comfortable recovery. Most patients notice significantly improved vision within a day or two, with full visual stability achieved over the following weeks. As with other forms of laser vision correction, the results are intended to be a permanent correction to your vision.
